Captain's Castle
403 East Walker Street

The Captain's Castle was so named by Captain Thomas R. Rogers, a Confederate officer and local pioneer banker.  In the early 1870's, he combined two older homes, one already located on the present site and the other an imposing landmark of Tennessee Planters Architecture.  The house, located on the riverfront, was moved across town on log rollers pulled by oxen.  The moved portion, built during the 1850's, is said to have been one of the towns most elaborate bawdy houses during its riverboat heyday.  This colorful old home, furnished with antiques, has a Texas Historical Survey Medallion and is listed in the National Registry of Homes worthy of preservation.  The home is currently owned by
Bill and Angie Herlocker.

Dotson-King House
312 North Walnut Street

In October 1862, J.B. Dotson and his bride, L. Vanduzen Culbertson Dotson, purchased this property.  "L.V." as Mrs. Dotson was called, was the only daughter of the Culbertson family.  Her parents and her brothers owned homes in this neighborhood.  Between October 1862 and March 1863, the Dotsons built a three room home with detached kitchen.  It is shown on the 1872 "bird's eye" map of Jefferson.  On May 12, 1863, Mr. Dotson was killed in the Battle of Raymond, Mississippi.  Mrs. Dotson occupied the home until 1905 when it was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. James King who greatly expanded the size of the home.  During the 1930's oil boom in Marion and surrounding counties, the Kings converted the home to a boarding house.  The home underwent major renovations in 1996 and retained the original floors, fireplaces, windows and doors.  The home is currently owned by Sharon and James Goolsby.

Singleton's Virginia Cross
401 North Soda Street

This Greek Revival house was built in 1859 and is patterned after 18th century Virginia houses of the Cruciform plan, hence the name Virginia's Cross.  The Singleton family owned the house for over 100 years beginning in 1885.  This significant example of Texas antebellum architecture was entered into the National Registry of Historic Places in 1970 and the Historic American Building Survey in 1966.  The Singleton's Virginia Cross, located at 401 North Soda Street, was restored in 1989 and is currently owned by Mary and Weldon Nash.  The home is furnished with antique furniture and accessories appropriate to the 1860's time period.

Chez Lafayette
305 West Lafayette Street

Located near historic downtown on Lafayette Street, Chez Lafayette is a rock house built in 1935 near the end of the Great Depression.  Native rock was plentiful in Marion County and landowners cleared their land and donated their rock to help their neighbors to build many rock structures in Jefferson.  The first owners of this home were Mr. and Mrs. Carey Greeney who operated a hamburger stand which was very popular in town.  A major update of the house, by Beth Crawford in 1999, gives the rock a warm cappuccino-look and is enhanced by a garden area with lovely flowers of yesteryear.  Chez Lafayette is owned by Mrs. Crawford.
